We are happy to invite you to the research seminar by the Center for Economic Expertise. On February 22nd Mustapha Douch (University of Edinburgh) will present the topic „The Heterogeneous Impact of Firm Upgrading on Energy Use” in 417 room and MS Teams.

Brief overview of the seminar

This paper examines the influence of export activity on a firm's energy use, with a particular focus on the role of the upgrading process. We introduce a firm-level complexity index incorporating two dimensions: the complexity of the goods traded and the complexity of the destination markets served. Employing a quasi-experimental shift-share research design, we demonstrate that external demand serves as an incentive for firms to engage in upgrading activities, subsequently resulting in reduced energy consumption. Additionally, we employ firm-specific markup measures and observe an inverted U-shaped relationship between upgrading and markups, indicating limited capacity to finance upgrading efforts through higher markups. These findings have important policy implications for addressing energy efficiency in the context of export-oriented firms.
