This short seminar, therefore, functions as a brainstorming session for us to identify (potential) research gaps as a part of strategic discussion at our department. This is also an occasion to introduce the research profile of our new colleague, Tom Hashimoto.

From Saskia Sassen to Peter J. Taylor, geographers have been focusing on the rise and fall of financial centres as a holistic framework to address a variety of topics such as financialisation and globalisation. Whether looking into the attributes of particular financial centres or the network of cities, there seem to be an element of both centralisation and decentralisation. This is particularly the case when we consider the development of the Capital Markets Union in the EU or the rise of FinTech services providers.
